When you smelt a lithium battery for electric cars, you melt down the battery at a very high temperature. The organic materials get burned as fuel or redundant, the metals are recovered for use in other applications, and the lithium and remaining materials go into a slag. Eventually, the slag can be used to produce concrete.

Direct Recovery

Ultimately, this process is similar to smelting in that it ends up with the materials being extracted and reused or disposed of safely. However, direct recovery doesn't involve high temperatures. Instead, the eco lithium battery is just taken apart manually.

Intermediate Battery Recycling

This process is in between the previous two processes in terms of energy required and the number of materials extracted. However, its main purpose is the same — to extract the reusable materials from the battery to reduce the number of materials that go to the landfill.

Ultimately, if recycling batteries from electric cars is important to you, you need to look for batteries that have been designed with recycling in mind. To that end, they should be set up in a way that makes them easy to dismantle and extract the various elements.
